Category: Windows componentsIn the next phase of Iran's nuclear program, it will be able to produce enough uranium for a nuclear weapon within six months to a year, according to assessments made by U.S. intelligence agencies and confirmed by a former U.S. commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East.
The assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) states that the Islamic Republic of Iran "will almost certainly achieve the capability to produce sufficient fissile material for a nuclear weapon within the next several months to a year."
While the assessment by the Defense Intelligence Agency and the Central Intelligence Agency is largely based on Iranian public statements, assessments from other agencies, such as the FBI and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (DNI), are not as definitive. The DNI, the FBI and the DIA declined to comment on the intelligence assessments.
On August 30, the head of Iran's nuclear program, Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, claimed that Iran has produced a small amount of uranium enriched to the level of 20 percent, and that "within six to eight months we will be able to produce 20 percent uranium."
Iran's nuclear program has long been a source of tensions between the United States and Iran. Iran's nuclear program has been developed with the express aim of producing nuclear weapons. The United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has consistently stated that Iran has to date "not carried out any activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device." The Security Council passed a resolution in 2006 that passed a third round of economic sanctions against Iran, and in 2010 the Security Council renewed the resolution for a period of one year. The resolution stipulated that if Iran did not suspend its nuclear program, it would face further sanctions.
In 2010, the White House sent the Obama administration's 'Axis of Evil' speech to the U.N. General Assembly, which included Iran as a primary threat to world peace. Former President George W. Bush formally withdrew from the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in the same year.
